United Way Ghana (UWG), an NGO, on Tuesday renovated classrooms and five selected homes of the aged and undertook a clean-up exercise as a way of celebrating Valentine’s Day with the needy in society.

The beneficiary schools included Mamprobi Market One Basic School, Akropong School for the Blind, Nima Cluster of Schools, Krobo Odumase Girls School and some other schools from Bawjiase and Senya Breku in the Central Region.

The exercise on the theme: “Sharing is caring and caring is love" was undertaken in partnership with BASICS International, Barclays Bank, UT bank, Tigo, and Coca cola is an annual event of life changing.

Dr Juliette Tuakli, President of UWG, said they were proud of the work they did because they engaged people they were not in affiliation with, people with disability and the needy who were hardly recognised by society.

She said UWG invited all members of society to share their unique talents and lend a hand in building a regional and worldwide community.

Mrs Doha Smith, Vice President of UWG said Valentine’s Day was specifically chosen to clear the minds of people that it was not a day for only those in relationships but a day of sharing and caring.

Mr Scott O’ Halloran, Ambassador of BASICS International who led a volunteer group to renovate the classrooms at Mamprobi Market One Basic School, said BASICS' aim was to educate and reach out to needy children.

He said it was a life changing experience for the under privileged in the selected communities because education was a means to eliminate poverty.

UWG was established about 125 years ago and for the past 85 years, has existed on the African continent working in 41 countries.

It works to improve the health, education and income generation in impoverished communities throughout the country by working on water and sanitation issues, supporting education projects focused on girls and hosting capacity building workshops for communities.
