University College of Education Cries for Accommodation

The Vice chancellor of the University College of Education, Winneba, Professor Josephus Anamoah-Mensah, has appealed to the various estate developers in the country to assist the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) in the university's quest of providing accommodation for the ever-increasing number of the student population.

The vice chancellor who made these remarks at the 10th matriculation of freshmen who are to pursue various courses in Degree, Post-Diploma and certificates in Education at Winneba on Thursday January 9, 2003, also appealed to the District Assemblies to assist them in the same manner.

Professor Anamoah-Mensah said efforts are being made to embrace more certificate "A" Teachers in the field to upgrade themselves. He added that "all this calls for provision of structures which are conducive for academic studies".

He admonished the new entrants as well as the continuing students to avoid excessive drinking of alcohol and also carve a good image for themselves and the university.

The Registrarof the university, J. N. Aryetey administered the matriculation oath. He confirmed the autonomous statue of the university and also informed the new entrants of the renaming of the Liberty Hall to Nana Ghartey Hall.

He gave a brief historic background of the late King of Winneba. In a related Development, a fresher of the English Department of the University College of Education, Winneba, Bright Richard Andam has appealed to the various universities in the country to make the admission of students into the universities more convenient.

He said many of the teachers in the field wish to upgrade their knowledge, but are unable to, due to the nature of qualification required by the universities. He expressed the hope that measures would be put in place to help those teachers.
