University don calls for support for education

Prof John Nelson Buah, the Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), has said ensuring quality education at all levels was a shared responsibility for all and not the government alone.

He said though the ultimate responsibility was on the government, the community, parents, teachers and students all had critical roles to play to complement the efforts of the government.

Prof. Buah said this at the 37th speech and prize giving day of the Edinaman Senior High School at Elmina on the theme “Quality Senior High School Education, the Bedrock of a Successful Career Building.”

In a speech read on his behalf, he said it was prudent for parents to contribute to quality of education their children received by giving them the basic foundation and ensuring responsible parenting at home.

He said the community could also help in the procurement of computers and other teaching aids to support government.

“The efforts by the government over the years have resulted in some improvement in our educational facilities even though I must hasten to add that we are not there yet and there is more room for improvement, hence the need for more collaboration,” Prof Buah said.

Alhaji Issah Abass, the Headmaster of the School, expressed gratitude to the Parent/Teacher Association (PTA), individuals and organizations who had helped to bring the school to its present state.

He said even though there was a general decline in the rate students passed the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Education nationwide, Edinaman Senior High School had over 98 percent pass last year and described it as a great success.

Alhaji Abass said he was unhappy about the poor state of the school’s bus, unavailability of teachers’ quarters and lack of a fence wall which often made it difficult monitoring the students.

He appealed to the government, old students, philanthropist and other co-operate bodies to assist the school.

The Central Regional Minister Mr. Aquinas Tawiah Quansah acknowledged the immense contributions of parents and other stakeholders to the attainment of quality education and said the government was committed to ensuring that there existed quality education at all levels.

He said the government would soon start building a boarding facility for the school.

The Member of Parliament for Komenda -Edina –Eguafo-Abrem, Dr. Nana Ato Arthur, donated two sets of jerseys and an amount of Ghc 2,000 to the school and promised to institute a scholarship scheme for best mathematics students.

Master Joseph Agdezuke, the school prefect, spoke about how erratic power supply was affecting their studies and suggested that schools should be exempted from the ongoing load shedding exercise.
