University of Ghana expresses concern about student indiscipline

The University of Ghana has decided to initiate measures to stop the abuse of freedom and the growing disregard for its rules and regulations by students.

A statement issued by the university authorities said contrary to university rules and regulations governing processions, decent behaviour and respect for authority, some students of the Commonwealth Hall on November 15 brought the image of the university into disrepute.

On that day between 15 and 20 males from Commonwealth Hall, wearing only under pants, danced in the streets between Commonwealth Hall, Volta Hall, JCR and the Sociology Department and engaged in obscene behaviour.

Some of the students were naked and, accompanied by their semi-naked colleagues, entered the Volta Hall.

The statement said the university considered their conduct an affront to decency and this behaviour should not be tolerated and would respond appropriately.

''We have realised that the time has come to act in order to protect the university's image and indicate to its students and the general public that it takes charge of training the future leaders of the country''.

The university appealed to the general public, particularly parents and guardians of students, to support the attempt to deal with these matters of indiscipline.

The statement said practices and behaviour bordering on occultism were becoming prevalent and appealed to parents and guardians to advise their wards against such practices.
