The University of Ghana has postponed the start of the 2024/2025 academic year due to an ongoing strike action by three key tertiary employee unions for improved working conditions.

In a statement issued by the Office of the Registrar on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, the University announced the delay and informed students and other stakeholders of the decision.

"It is announced that for the attention of students and other stakeholders that commencement of the 2024/2025 academic year has been postponed," it stated.

The University also clarified that while the strike is ongoing, special programmes will proceed as planned.

"Special Programmes will proceed as scheduled. A new date for the commencement of the commencement of the 2024/2025 academic year will be announced in due course," it noted.

The postponement is as a result of unresolved labour disputes between university management and key unions, including the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG).

These three unions have been on an indefinite strike over long-standing demands for improved working conditions, including delayed pension contributions and non-payment of vehicle maintenance allowances to the suspension of certain agreed-upon allowances.
