University of Ghana research 'bogus'; they can do better – Majority Leader

Majority leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has described as "bogus", a research conducted by the Department of Political Science, University of Ghana about the country's legislature.

He says the research is "shrouded in populism" than an academic work.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' programme, he explained that the researchers do not understand the work of the various parliamentarians and ministers.

He, however believes, they can do better and conduct a more comprehensive research.

"It is a good work, but I believe they can team up with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to conduct a proper research which will represent the work of Parliamentarians."

"But, you know, the work of parliamentarians come in different forms and duties and that you will need some level of education to conduct a research about our work," he added.

The study was conducted on the 275 constituencies by questioning 100 persons from each of the constituencies. 27, 500 people were interviewed in all.

Based on the report, Dr. Isaac Owusu Mensah, a Senior Lecturer at the Political Science Department, University of Ghana revealed that Collins Dauda, the MP for the Asutifi South is the best MP in Ghana while Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Minister of Education and MP for Manhyia South Constituency is the best Minister in Ghana per the survey.

It was also revealed that 49.5% of Ghanaians would not vote for the incumbent MPs while 42.6% were likely to vote for the incumbent MPs.

However, 7.9% were undecided when questioned if they would vote for the incumbent MP.

Findings of the study was jointly presented on Monday in Accra by Dr. Isaac Owusu-Mensah and Mr Kaakyire Frempong, both Senior Lecturers at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana.
