University of Leicester mourns Captain Mahama; set to graduate this summer

The University of Leicester, UK, is bereaved by the grisly murder of Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama as it receives news of his sudden demise with “great regret”.

It has emerged that the late captain was set to graduate this summer from the university as a distance student in Master of Science (MSc) in Security and Risk Management.

The captain of the Ghana Armed Forces was slain by residents of Denkyira-Obuasi in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central region on May 29, 2017.

Having covered about 10 kilometers in his routine morning jogging, Captain Mahama had stopped in that small community to purchase snails from a woman.

While removing money to pay, the woman saw his pistol and quickly raised alarm through the assemblyman for the area, who organised the townfolks to lynch him, police preliminary investigations revealed.

All attempts to negotiate with them that he was a serving officer in the military failed while the people pounced on him with deadly weapons snuffing out his life in an act that has roundly been condemned as dastardly.

A statement posted on the website of the University of Leicester said Captain Mahama was a student in its Department of Criminology.

“We have learnt, with great regret, of the death of Maxwell Mahama, a Captain in the Ghanaian Army.

“Captain Mahama was a distance learning student in our Department of Criminology reading for the degree of Master of Science (MSc) in Security and Risk Management.

He had enrolled on the degree in 2015 and was due to graduate at this summer’s degree ceremonies,” the school said. Ghana’s Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has also stated that Maxwell Mahama was to be promoted to a ‘Major’ after he successfully sat his examinations a few weeks ago.

The late Capt. Mahama was with the 5th Infantry of the Ghana Armed Forces and the detachment commander of troops on operational duties in the Upper Denkyira West District.

At least 15 persons including women and a 12 year old boy have been arrested in connection with the mob action against the captain about a week ago. He would be buried on June 9, the family have said.
