University "student" steals at campus

Accra Jan.27, GNA - A 36 year-old driver who disguised himself as a student of the University of Ghana, Legon on Tuesday appeared before the Accra Circuit Court charged with stealing and loitering. Fredrick Kweku Atisso was alleged to have stolen personal effects valued at GH¢450 cedis, land indenture valued GH¢500 cedis, two Ghanaian passports, 45,000 CFA and 10,000 dollars belonging to one Sambian Befitib.

The court, presided over by Justice Dickson Daketsey did not take his plea and remanded him to police custody to re-appear on February 3, 2009.

The facts of the case as presented in court are that the complainant in the case arrived on the campus and parked his Golf saloon car with registration number GW7861 V at the Volta Hall car park and went to the Sociology Department. He returned a few minutes later only to detect that his car has been broken into while his brief case containing his personal effects, including a land indenture, two Ghanaian passports, the roadworthiness certificate of his car and other valuable documents, including some foreign and local currencies had been stolen.

A by-stander spotted Atisso pick the brief case and boarded a car with the registration number GT 5656 Y and sped off. The complainant reported that car number to the police. On December 20, Atisso was spotted again at the campus with the same car. When he was signalled to stop by the university security for questioning he sped off but crashed into two security cars of the university. Atisso admitted the offence when he was arrested.
