University unions demand mandate for vice chancellors

Accra, April 27, GNA - Tension is mounting at the University of Ghana where two workers groups are demanding that government should give the Vice Chancellors of Ghana the mandate to negotiate with them for enhanced salaries.

The Legon branches of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) and the Federation of the Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) say they are making the demand following the refusal of the government to mandate the Vice chancellors Ghana (VCG) to meet the two unions to negotiate salary increases.

The Chairman of Legon Branch of TEWU, Mr. Peter Lumor told the large gathering on campus on Friday that both unions had written to the VCG through the General Secretary of TUC Ghana demanding that by April 30, 2007, the government should give the mandate to the VCG to call the two unions for negotiations.

Meanwhile, general meetings have also been held in the other state universities in Ghana on salary negotiations.
