Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Monitoring and Evaluation of the Ghana Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Mr. Peter Agyman-Duah, has revealed that the sale of unwholesome goods on the market is alarming.

He has therefore called on the media to champion the fight against the menace.

He said the media can be very instrumental in educating the public on the need to be circumspect when buying goods especially food from the market.

Mr. Agyeman-Duah was speaking at a public forum for the media on counterfeiting and the safety of the consumers organised by the FDA in Bolgatanga.

The forum was geared towards educating the public on expired goods and to help the consumer patronize wholesome goods.

He said the cause of certain illnesses such as liver and kidney diseases could be due to the consumption of expired foods or medication.

He explained that when food stuff expired, it produces toxic chemicals which are harmful to the body.

He urged the public and consumers to always report people indulged in the sale of expired goods to the FDA.

Mr. James Lartey, Public Relations Officer of the FDA charged media organisations to regulate the publications and advertisements of products on their networks so as to avoid the publicizing counterfeit and expired goods.

He asked the media to always cross-check with the Food and Drugs Authority for the authenticity of the products before advertising them and warned those who consider only the money involved to desist from doing so.
