Georgina Ohemang, the Ablekuma West Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has urged Ghanaians to continue coexisting peacefully to sustain the country's democracy.

She emphasized that this is crucial for achieving development goals and maintaining Ghana's status as a beacon of democracy within the sub-region.

The Municipal Director offered this advice during an engagement with the Women's Fellowship of the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, Ghana, in Dansoman, as part of the activities commemorating this year's Constitution Week.

Constitution Week, an annual event organized by the NCCE since 2001, celebrates the country's return to constitutional rule in January 1993.

Its purpose is to foster and sustain awareness of the principles, objectives, and relevance of the 1992 Constitution to national development, as well as to deepen and maintain Ghana's democracy.

Additionally, it aims to raise awareness among Ghanaians about the importance of upholding national unity, peaceful coexistence, and instilling patriotism in citizens.

This year's celebrations are themed "Together We Can Build Ghana; So Get Involved."

Ghana is often cited as a shining example of democracy in the sub-region, having successfully conducted eight elections and witnessed three incident-free transfers of political power from one party to another over the past 30 years.

Ohemang acknowledged Ghana's significant progress in consolidating its democracy, highlighting the country's eight successful elections and peaceful transitions of power as noteworthy achievements.

However, she noted that this success can only be maintained if Ghanaians continue to prioritize harmony over conflict, uniting as one people to promote national unity and development.

She encouraged Ghanaians, particularly first-time voters and the youth who have not yet acquired their voter identity cards, to participate in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

This will enable them to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming election.

The voter registration exercise, which began on May 7, is expected to conclude on May 27, 2024.
