Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has applauded the use of the Wolo e-learning platform in communities. She is convinced that it is a useful tool which will enable students in their learning processes.
“…I think it’s a very useful tool but I think they can also extend their reach, she said.”
The project which is designed to offer educational skills training online also presents learning opportunities to several youth with limited access to educational opportunities.
Speaking at the launch of the Wolo e-learning in communities, Mrs. Ursula Owusu emphasized the importance of the platform for students, encouraging them to patronize it and develop the habit of reading.
“Current teachers who are teaching the curriculum in schools around the country, have provided these learning materials in an electronic format, to make it available for every child, in every part of this country to also experience what those in our top schools are also doing to complement what their teachers are teaching them at the same time.
“While they are on holidays, once you know that the content is in line with the GES curriculum, and the syllabus for the various subject areas and teachers are teaching it in a manner in which it will make students learn and assimilate lessons quickly and they also have opportunities to interact with the students”.
MP for Ablekuma West revealed that the funds for this project will be provided by government and this will be done in collaboration with both the Ministry of Communication and the Ghana Education Service.
“We will put in place the monetary mechanism for that in conjunction with the ministry and the Ghana Education Service which already has an e-learning department whom we are working closely with.”
According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Wolo Project, Mr. Joe Anim, the initiative has been designed for deprived communities, to ensure that students who live in deprived communities without internet connectivity and are unable to afford the cost of courses and data charge benefit from this project; this will be delivered to them via television or internet.
Wolo e-learning is based on the syllabus for high schools and it is being delivered as video lectures with self-tests across multiple media channels.
Students can access these lessons as video-on-demand (VOD) or Livestreams. They are taught by a team of tutors with outstanding track record.
Subjects available include core science, business and general arts.
It has as a matter of fact been recommended for gold-track students on the double-track system particularly considering revision may become easier with the platform.
