Use tenure of Office to solve problems-Chairman of Council

Tamale, Aug. 5, GNA - Dr. Sulley Gariba, Chairman of the Governing Council of the Tamale Polytechnic has urged his colleagues on the Council to use their tenure of Office to solve local development challenges and jobs for the people. He said the council needed to recreate the spirit of service to the community by partnering with local and foreign NGOs and other reputable institutions to build the capacities of communities to solve their problems.

Dr. Gariba made the call at the inauguration of the Governing Council of the Tamale Polytechnic in Tamale on Tuesday. The Council members include: Alhaji A. B. A. Fusieni, Ms. Zelia Ali, Freeman Abramani, George Oseik, Alhassan Dahamani, Mohammed Ibrahim, Adallah Issifu, and Abdallah Ibrahim. Dr. Gariba noted that many public and private sector workers in Tamale were already studying at the Polytechnic while working. He however expressed regret that most of the working students were only doing this as a means to gain certificates to leave their employers for better work.

Dr. Gariba said now that the Polytechnic was producing graduates, community service should be taken to greater heights. He urged management of the Polytechnic to initiate a survey of the community's perceptions and expectations of the Polytechnic before December 2009 and repeat the survey in subsequent years to find out how the community rates the Polytechnic to enable them assess their performance as a Council.

He said the results of the survey would also guide them to make their annual plans.

Dr. Gariba made a passionate appeal to Council members to remain united, focused and committed to their work. He advised them against the canker of rumours and leaking of information that seems to be bedevilling the activities of the polytechnic and making it difficult for people to work in the institution.

Mr. Moses Mabengba, Deputy Northern Regional Minister urged the public to give the new council the needed support to enable it put in the necessary measures to develop the manpower resource of the country. He also urged the Council members to put away partisan politics in their deliberations in issues affecting the polytechnic.
