History was made at the newly constructed New Fadama astro turf on Sunday night when the Annual Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup introduced the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technolgy in the grande finale of the Zongo community football tournament.

The amazing and remarkable feat was employed in the final game between Kasoa and Hohoe Zongo, with Kasoa defeating debutants Hohoe to lift the trophy for the first time.

Interestingly, the only goal of the match was determined by VAR after the centre referee consulted the well fixed technology to make a penalty.

With the National Chief Imaml himself watching, and flanked by an array of dignitaries including Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, Black Stars Coach CK Akunnor and the legendary Abedi Pele, the centre referee halted proceedings to consult the VAR to be sure of a penalty claim for Kasoa.

The move stunned the over 5000 people inside the stadium, who were wondering what was going on, and after checking thoroughly on the screen, the referee whistled for a penalty for Kasoa, who converted the kick for the opener and the only goal of the match.

Later in yhe second half, the referee again had to consult the screen to determine another penalty claim, this time for Hohoe. He, however, decided it wasn't a penalty.

By successfully implementing VAR, the Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup has become the first soccer event in Ghana to implement, and young referee has also made history as the first referee in Ghana to make a VAR call.

Unsurprisingly, the successful implementation of VAR has been one of the major talking points of the successful 6th edition of the Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup.
