The Valued Added Tax (VAT)Service has four months to wind up its activities, according to a recent news broadcast by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, monitored by Ghana Review.

The broadcast confirmed that guidelines are being worked to enable VAT registered units to file their returns for April and May by the first half of July.

Mr. Ezekiel Asamoah, Director of Service said in an interview that the service will also make refund to the operators who are qualified.

Parliament on 13 June 1995 passed two bills to replace the VAT law which came into force on 1 March 1995. The bills are the Customs,Excise and Preventive (Management) Amendment Bill and the Service and Sales Tax Bill.

Mr. Asamoah said even though the law has been repealed, traders are obliged to pay to government chest whatever they will not like to make returns.

At the service last week, all employees were not bothered and they went about their normal duties but some of them wondered what will happen to the vast database that the service has collected.

Over 300 employees scattered all over the country, majority of them were seconded from Customs, Excise and Preventive Services and the National Revenue Services.
