VR records 88.7 percent in voters' registration exercise

Ho, June 1, GNA - The Volta Region recorded 88.9 percent turn-out during the recent voter registration photo-taking exercise, provisional figures released to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Ho on Tuesday by the Regional Directorate of the Electoral Commission (EC) have indicated. Buem Constituency recorded the highest turnout of 94.4 per cent while Central-Tongu; one of the newly created constituencies recorded the lowest of 71.6 per cent.

The statistics gave the region's provisional total number of voters during the March registration exercise as 880,347, out of which 782,735 were issued with photo-identity cards leaving a shortfall of 97,612. Turnout at the other new constituencies were, Krachi-West 93.5 per cent and Nkwanta-South, 82.9 per cent.

Figures for the other constituencies were Anlo, 89.1 percent, Keta, 94.2 percent, Ketu-North, 88.1 percent, Ketu-South, 91.0 percent and Avenor, 86.7 percent.

Others were, South-Tongu, 93.4 percent, North-Tongu, 82.1 percent, Ho-Central, 93.6 percent, Ho-West, 91.8 percent and Adaklu-Anyigbe, formerly Ho-East, 90.5 percent.

The rest were, North-Dayi, 83.7 percent, South-Dayi, 83.3 percent, Hohoe-North, 91.4 percent, Hohoe-South, 87.4 percent, Biakoye, 90.0 percent, Akan, 87.9 percent Krachi-East, 90.1 percent and Nkwanta-North, 84.4 percent.

Mr Muhammad Adoquaye, Regional Director, of the EC stressed in a chat with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the figures "were essentially provisional" as collation rehashing was still going on.

The EC had mistakenly indicated during the March registration exercise that photos for voter ID cards would be taken from June 18-23 instead of May 18-23, generating a furore based on fears that people would be unduly disenfranchised by the change in the dates.
