VRA Boss' Reign Of Terror?

Fri, 25 Jan 2002 Source: Chronicle

The Volta River Authority (VRA) is bursting at seams from the overbearing force and arbitrary control of its Chief Executive, Dr Charles Wereko Brobbey aka Tarzan. The Ghanaian Chronicle reports that “the reckless use of power and bullying tactics of his adminstration had generated so much tension among workers of the VRA that an explosion is imminenet.”

Tarzan is said to have constructed an executive bathroom at his office and thrown a lavish party with live band in attendance to mark his 100 days in office. “To furher elevate himself, he has decamped from his Abelemkpe residence, minus his wife and relocated at the plush colonial bungalow at Akuse from where he commutes to work daily.”

His two advisors are given monthly emoluments of about 10.5 million cedis. Dr Wereko Brobbey who was the Presidential candidate of the United Ghana Movement in the 2000 elections has also dismantled the Management Information Systems department and thrown out staff and equipment of about 50 computers to make room for the renovation of the place into a secretariat for use by the Board of VRA.

Some senior staff told the Chronicle that “he shouts at everybody down and does not listen to anyone. He wants to be seen working so he is just dislodging everything he met and trying to replace them with what he hardly understands.”

The workers say Tarzans behaviour has generated bad blood between himself and his surbordinates, culminating in a culture of silence and forced obedience. When contacted, Tarzan said he sees nothing wrong commuting from Akuse to Accra everyday adding that he is not the only person who stays outside Accra and attends work everyday.

He also noted that the allegations of bullying are not true since he communicates with the Directors of the various departments and not individual workers. Mr Wereko Brobbey says he will only accept that he is at fault if, he has stolen money; if he has gone wrong against the rules of the VRA and if he has fraudulently caused the state to loose money.
