The Volta River Authority (VRA) has given the assurance that the low level of water in the Akosombo Dam would not in anyway threaten electricity generation and supply in the country. The current level of 246 feet is below the minimum required level of 248 feet. Officials at the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) have expressed concern about the current operating level of the dam, describing it as precarious.
VALCO is the largest single consumer of electricity generated by the VRA in the country, using about 40 percent of the output at its Tema alumina smelting plant.
The Transmission Manager of VRA, Joseph Wiafe, says power can still be generated at the current level, stressing that the level is expected to rise before the end of the year due to expected rains. Paul Juati of the Meteorological Services Department confirmed in an interview that the forecast for the coming months indicates a favorable rainfall pattern in the Northern parts of the country as well as Burkina Faso, which could, hopefully, fill the Akosombo Dam.
