The Volta River Authority (VRA) has provided full scholarship, including tuition and other related expenses, for six students to study at the Akosombo International Senior Secondary School.

The Chief Executive of the VRA, Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby who made the presentation, said the gesture was in response to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II's request to VRA for support during a visit to Akosombo International School (AIS), in September 2001.

Dr. Wereko-Brobby said the institution of the Education Fund by the Asantehene was a clear manifestation of his exemplary and dynamic quality. He noted that the example of Otumfuo Osei Tutu was worthy of emulation and support.

The Chief Executive said the VRA is a socially responsible institution and said the Authority is currently reviewing its social policy to reflect the needs and aspirations of the society, especially those within its areas of operation.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II commended the VRA for its innovative contribution and directed the Administrators of the Fund to ensure that six brilliant but needy students of equal number of girls and boys are selected to benefit from the VRA scholarship.

He hoped that the beneficiaries would also keep up with the high academic standards and discipline associated with the Akosombo International School and become useful to their communities and the nation as a whole.

The Asantehene reiterated that the Fund was instituted to support education countrywide. Beneficiaries, since its inception have come from the length and breadth of Ghana including schools from the Greater Accra, Volta and Central Regions among others.

He hoped that more institutions would join the crusade to lay a solid foundation for education with a view to promote the socio-economic development of Ghana.

The Akosombo International School was established in September 1962 to cater for the children of workers engaged on the Akosombo Hydro-electric Project. Over the years it has developed three campuses in Akosombo, Akuse and Aboadze. The school is now open to the general public. It is rated among the best educational institutions in the country, and has a student population of 436 in the Senior Secondary division and about 1000 pupils in the basic division.

Also present at the ceremony were Rev. Ishmael Ghansah, Deputy Chief Executive in charge of Resources and Services who also serves as Chairman of the Executive Board of VRA Schools, Mrs. Grace Mannieson-Annancy, Ag. Director of VRA Schools, and Mrs. Gertrude Koomson, Ag. Director of Public Affairs, VRA.
