VRA donates towards upkeep of displaced communities

Ho, March 14, GNA - The Volta River Authority (VRA) has made available 40,000 Ghana cedis worth of rice and maize to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for distribution among communities displaced by the recent spillage from the Akosombo Hydro-electric Dam.

Ms Abla Fiadjoe, Director, General Services of the VRA, handed over 10,000 cedis worth of maize and rice to the Volta Regional Directorate of NADMO for distribution among 13 such displaced communities in the region. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Ho, Ms Fiadjoe said the donation was in response to request by NADMO to meet the short term food needs of the communities whose farms had been inundated by the flood waters.

Ms Fiadjoe urged the district assemblies of affected communities to enact and enforce bye-laws to stop people from encroaching on areas demarcated as flood prone.

Receiving the items, Mr Joseph Amenowode, Volta Regional Minister, thanked the VRA for helping NADMO to ameliorate the suffering of the affected communities. He acknowledged the positive contributions of VRA towards meeting the essential needs of communities displaced. Meanwhile one person was said to have been killed by a falling wall and about 121 others displaced during a rainstorm that hit 22 communities in the North-Tongu District last Saturday. Mr Henry Ametefe, Volta Regional Co-ordinator of NADMO, said some plastic wares, maize and rice would be dispatched immediately to the affected communities pending a full assessment of the situation for further assistance.
