The Leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has accused Speaker Alban Bagbin of fully supporting the actions of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus in Parliament.
Speaking to the media after the Supreme Court sitting on Monday, November 11, 2024, Afenyo-Markin expressed frustration over the NDC caucus occupying the Majority seats in Parliament.
According to him, Speaker Bagbin has the authority to direct the NDC caucus to move to the Minority seats to maintain peace but has deliberately neglected to enforce the correct procedures.
He claimed that the Speaker’s actions indicated his support for the NDC caucus.
“...Sammy Gyamfi went on the News File program on Saturday and said they know about the Supreme Court ruling; however, until the Speaker announce it to Parliament, they won’t move. So it means that the whole party machinery is on an agenda. How else should the Speaker communicate?”
“Mr Speaker, in the October 22 sitting, announced that he had received the ruling of the Supreme Court and explained the content of it. How else were they expecting the announcement to be made unless they are conniving and colluding and Mr Speaker wants to act as though he is not supporting what the NDC side is doing,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin further stated, “But, clearly, indeed, he is supporting them actively and constructively because you come into the chamber as the head of the Assembly, and you see one group of people sitting on somebody’s seat, and you pretend you’ve not seen it.”
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has adjourned its ruling on the vacant seats case to Tuesday, November 12, 2024.
