Accra, March 7, GNA - Students from the Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon have embarked upon a clean up exercise in Accra to create awareness among the public about the need to maintain a clean environment. The exercise is part of activities marking their 47th Hall week celebrations.

Mr Samuel Quarshie, an official of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), who represented the Mayor of Accra at the function, commended the students for exhibiting a high sense of patriotism and concern for the health of the people.

He entreated other students to follow the example of the hall. The Hall treasurer, Mr Lawerh Issaka Tetteh, who spoke to the GNA, indicated that they were moved by the possible disastrous consequences of the filth in the city to carry out the exercise.

He said similar arrangements had been made to carry the exercise to some selected rural areas to educate the public on the dangers inherent in living in an unclean environment.

He said fund raising activity would be organised during the celebration to raise money to renovate the Hall Library and Reading Room to facilitate smooth academic work and appealed for financial support from companies, organizations and individuals.

The celebration is on the theme: "FIGHTING HIV/AIDS IN A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT; THE ROLE OF THE UNIVERSITY STUDENT". The activities would come to a climax from Saturday April 2 to Sunday April 10, 2005.
