Accra Jan. 27, GNA - Professor Kwadwo Asenso Okyere, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon on Tuesday announced pardoning Mr Alexander K.K Abban, one of the eight students of Commonwealth Hall recently sanctioned for unlawful conduct.
A statement from the Public Affairs Directorate of the University said the Vice Chancellor's pardon followed, Mr Abban's appeal he had made to him.
"In a letter dated December 22, 2003, the Vice Chancellor expressed his regret for any embarrassment caused by the imposition of the initial sanction," the statement said.
According to the statement, "the pardoned student had his sanction of caution and re-taking of matriculation of the oath revoked, when it later became clear that his actions were rather geared towards persuading his colleagues to desist from embarking upon the march to the Vice Chancellor's lodge, a role that was not clearly presented to the Disciplinary Committee."
Eight students of the University belonging to the Commonwealth Hall were sanctioned following their unhappiness over a spell of water shortage on the campus. The students marched to the Vice Chancellor's lodge and traumatised his family, assaulted security personnel and vandalised property. 27 Jan. 04
