Victims of Accra Floods and Fire remembered at Westminster Methodist Central Hall in London

At 14.30 hours on Sunday the 14th of June, 2015, a memorial service was held at the Central Hall of the Westminster Methodist Church in London for the victims of the Accra Fire and Floods disaster. The service which was organised jointly by the Ghana High Commission and the Ghana Christian Council- UK was well attended and chaired by the Ghana High Commissioner, H.E Victor Emmanuel Smith.

Preaching the sermon, Rev Emmanuel Aggrey –Ogoe pointed out that the disaster in Ghana is a collective loss and a blot on the Ghanaian memory and so every effort should be made to ensure it does not recur in future. Under the solemn officiation of Reverend William Davis, Dr Shadrach Ofosuware requested the congregation to observe a minute silence for the departed and prayed for their families and the entire country.

In his remarks, H.E. Victor Emmanuel Smith prayed for the presence of the Lord to be felt by those who are grieving, injured or lost their property and livelihood. Referring to the tragedy as one of the darkest days in Ghana’s history, High Commissioner Smith lamented on the level of indiscipline in the country, across the board. He stressed that indiscipline did not only refer to littering our environment with plastic waste and building on waterways, but corruption also is a major kind of indiscipline which contributes in no small measure to failures in our economic development. H.E. Victor Smith used the occasion to commend the security services for their quick and professional response in bringing the carnage under control, minimizing loss to lives and property by so doing.

H.E. Victor Emmanuel Smith thanked the Ghana Christian Council-UK, the National Council of Ghana Unions-UK and Ireland, Nananom and Traditional Leaders, members of the Ghana Mission and all Ghanaians who graced the occasion in memory of our departed compatriots.
