In a graphic video reported to be in the possession of The Chronicle newspaper, two junior ranked police officers have allegedly subjected a suspect in their custody to severe physical abuse.

The video, according to the news outlet, showed the two personnel stationed at the Railway Station of the New Juaben South Municipality of the Eastern Region using bicycle tyres to assault the suspect who is said to have been accused of stealing GHS1,600 from his employer.

The suspect, who has only been identified as Dodzi, according to The Chronicle, insisted that he took GHS350 from his boss’ private car and not the reported GHS1,600 he was being accused of stealing.

Despite initial denial of the incident by the two policemen, they allegedly claimed that they sought to extract a confession from the suspect and therefore resorted to beating him with bicycle tyres.

Father of the suspect, Mr Alegbe Daniel, recounted to The Chronicle that the police, after assaulting his son, detained him from Friday, September 27 up until Tuesday, October 1 before he was granted bail without any medical attention for injuries.

Mr Alegbe, however, argued that the law states that a suspect should not be detained for more than 48 hours without being duly processed for court.

The Chronicle reports that the accused police personnel are lobbying behind the scenes for an amicable out of court settlement after the video footage of the incident was leaked.
