Vice President Dr Muhammadu Bawumia has said that one of the major factors that has led to the failure of government to eradicate poverty is violent extremism.

He mentioned that due to lack of security to combat violent extremism, government is obliged to invest in more resources.

Dr Bawumia indicated that these investments are needed to provide the needed protection for our citizens.

Adding that the provision comes at a cost as governments are being compelled to take away these resources which are needed to make available job opportunities for the people in the country.

“Lack of security through violent extremism has largely undermined government efforts to eradicate poverty and transform our societies.

Governments are often compelled to invest more resources in recruiting and equipping to mobilize security sectors, institutions to be able to provide the much needed protection for our citizens.

This has come at a real cost since in many instances scarce resources are taken away from investing in economic activities which could generate more employment and opportunities for our youth.”

He made these remarks on Day 2 of the Kofi Annan Peace and Security Forum, held at the Movenpick Hotel Accra to mark the one year anniversary of the demise of the former UN Secretary General.

Vice President Bawumia however announced government’s continuous support to bringing peace and security in the international community.

“I wish to state that the government will continue to support efforts by the international community to bring peace and security to the world. Our commitment toward elimination of violent extremism will require critical policy changes.”

He also announced the new library and museum which will be built by the government of Ghana in honour of the late Kofi Annan.

“The government of Ghana in consultation with the family of the late Kofi Annan has also decided to build a library and a museum in honour of Kofi Annan.”
