Volta Lake Disaster: Gender Minister deploys support for affected families

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has extended condolences to families affected by the fatal boat disaster on the Volta Lake.

In a statement issued on April 10, 2026, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, expressed sorrow over the incident, which involved women and children, with several others still unaccounted for.

“The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has received with sorrow reports of the tragic boat accident on the Volta Lake, which has claimed several lives, including women and children, with others still unaccounted for,” it stated.

It further directed the Department of Social Welfare to immediately engage families of the victims and offer psychosocial support.

“In response to the tragedy, the Honourable Minister has directed the Department of Social Welfare, in collaboration with the relevant district authorities, to immediately engage affected families to provide psychosocial support and assess urgent needs to mitigate the impact of this tragedy,” the statement said.

The Ministry stressed the importance of enforcing safety measures in water transportation.

“The Ministry remains committed to ensuring that vulnerable families receive the care, protection, and support they need in times of crisis. The Ministry stands in solidarity with all affected persons and assures them that no one will be left behind,” it added.

The accident, which occurred on April 8, 2026, between Sikakope and Mataiko communities on the Volta Lake, claimed several lives.
