Volta NDC Condemns Assasination Attempt On Mills

THE CENTRAL Region branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the alleged assassination attempt on the party's flag bearer, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills at Hohoe in the Volta Region over the weekend.

According to a statement issued by the Regional Secretary, Peter Light Koomson, its investigation has revealed that a group of New Patriotic Party (NPP) members, led by the constituency youth organizer, George Egbenunya, planned the unwarranted attack on the life of the NDC leader.

The NDC said it was at a loss as to the circumstances under which the white Nissan double pick-up (with registration number GR 54 A) used by the group "clandestinely and aggressively" ran into the way of the NDC flag bearer after it had given way to the entourage and the police vehicle escorting Prof. Mills.

The regional secretary said the investigations also indicated that those who fled from the white Nissan double pick-up following the accident were believed to be Togolese.

The NDC advised the NPP government and it cohorts to do away with "crude politics" and conduct a decent and dignified electioneering campaign towards the December 2004 general election.

It further called on the government to direct its spotlight on ways and means to fulfil its numerous broken promises to the people and desist from adopting "diversionary tactics" that would bring chaos and instability in the country.

The party hoped the police would bring the culprits to justice.
