Volta Police Parade Robbers

ELEVEN ARMED Robbers who allegedly blocked the main Dodo-Papase-Nkwanta road in the Volta Region at 2:30am on August 13, 2010 and robbed passengers on board a Benz bus and Kia Rhino vehicle with registration numbers GR 1968B and GE 6158-10 respectively, have been arrested by the Volta Regional Police command.

The passengers, who were travelling from Accra to Kpandai, were robbed of various sums of money and other valuables.

The robbers however escaped into the bush before the police could get to the scene to arrest them.

Volta Regional Police Commander DCOP David Nennyi Ampah Bennin, who briefed the media on Thursday, said his men however arrested three Nigerians, Abu Osmanu, Mohammed Bube, both 30, at Papawie and Fuseini Bubakari, 42, at Dapaa. He added that his men managed to arrest the three, who were allegedly part of the robbery, with the help of the youth of Papawie on the same day.

DCOP Ampah-Bennin said two days later, 3 other members of the group, Tombianu Francis, 37, a Burkinabe, Atta Dzitriame, 45, a Togolese and Kwame Abotsi, 57, a Ghanaian were also arrested at Dodo-Bertle with assistance from the youth of the town.

The Regional Police boss noted that as a result of the intensified search by his men, 5 more members of the group; John Kwasi Appiah, a Ghanaian, 28, Moro Fuseini, 30, Kwame Salifu, 40, both Togolese, Yusifu Bandole, a Burkinabe and Moro Cau, a Nigerian, bringing the total number to 11.

DCOP Ampah Bennin disclosed that when Abu Osmanu was arrested, 7 mobile phones with accessories, two body sprays, two wristwatches and a sum of GH¢564.00 were found on him. He noted that his men are doing all they can to retrieve the weapons they used during the robberies.

The police believe they are the same group of people who have been terrorizing travelers on the Sogakope-Aflao-Keta and Sikumah-Hohoe roads, expressing the hope that with the arrest of the suspects, highway robberies in the region and elsewhere in the country will reduce.

He encouraged all victims of robberies in the region and other parts of the country to come forward and identify the suspected robbers to enable the police to get a successful prosecution.

DCOP Ampah-Bennin also expressed his appreciation to the youth of the various towns who helped to arrest the suspects, appealing to others to emulate them.
