Volta River islands have schools - DCE

The Ada East District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr John Nurudin Ahortu, says children from the five main overbank or island communities do not attend school beyond the Volta River because they have such amenities at home.

He told the Ghana News Agency that Azizakpe, Alorkpem, Aflive, Tuanikorpe and Perdiatorkorpe communities have been provided schools and teachers so that the island children would not endure the daily commuting to schools at Ada Foah and Big Ada across the River.

He said apart from education, Perdiatorkorpe has a clinic with personnel whilst the remaining four communities depend on a mobile clinic.

Mr Ahortu was reacting to media reports purporting that island children cross the River to Big Adah and Ada Foah to attend school and that during the process, they do not wear life jackets.

“The District Assembly does not and will not encourage school children crossing the river to Big Ada and Ada Foah daily to school,” he said
