Mr Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Ablekuma Central, has called on Ghanaians to rise above ethnicity and parochial interests and retain the party in power in the coming elections.

The MP who was launching his campaign dubbed: “Meet the MP at Your Door Steps” at Abossey Okai in Accra, said the NDC was the only political party capable of pursuing policies that would enhance the socio-economic and political development of the country.

He said politicians of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have given assurances to Ghanaians of equitable distribution of the national cake but when they had the chance in 2000 they adopted the “property owning democracy” mantra leaving many parts of the country impoverished and under-developed.

Mr Chaie challenged political parties contesting in 2012 election to demonstrate that they would be able to formulate pragmatic policies and undertake vigorous development projects to improve the living conditions of the people as the NDC had done when given the power.

He said the opposing parties are making vain promises, such as free senior high school education and paying unemployment benefits and that “it would be prudent for Ghanaians to vote for a party that have practically shown that they would be able to provide the people with infrastructural amenities such as roads, water, hospitals and schools to get them out of poverty, ignorance, disease and illiteracy when voted into power.”

The MP reminded the electorate that NPP politicians belonged to what he termed “profit minded class,” adding that that ideology did not help the ordinarily man on the streets and is also unhealthy for the country’s young democracy since it was about “the rich geting richer and the poor geting poorer”.

Mr Tetteh Chaie said democracy is defined as “entrusting power into the hands of responsible people who can ensure good governance and development” adding that “it was important to check the track records of the political parties seeking your mandate to enable you to choose dynamic and competent leaders to bring development.”

He said “the NDC is the only party among all the political parties that has the people at heart” and called on the constituency executives to educate the electorate on national issues, their freedoms and rights and civic responsibilities, to ensure peace, unity and stability.

Mr Francis Quarshie, Ablekuma Central Constituency Chairman of the NDC, said the NPP left so many problems such as high corruption, armed robbery, the collapse of the energy sector and lack of basic amenities to the current government and the nation needed a selfless leader like President John Mahama who cares about the people and would help transform their lives.

He said for the previous 12 years that the NPP took the seat of Ablekuma Central Constituency, there was no progress in the area but when the NDC took over from them there had been dramatic changes in the lives of the constituents especially the youth.

Mr Quarshie appealed to the youth to involve themselves in the nation-building and eschew anti-social activities which would ruin their lives and lauded the MP for his initiative to interact with the electorate and enable them become abreast with programmes that would aid them to play meaningful roles in the society.

Alhaji Halidu Haruna of the Office of the President urged the NDC supporters to be mindful that politics is not about division, enmity and insults; and advised members of the party to consolidate the peace and unity in the constituency for resounding victory in the December 2012 Election.
