More registered voters are trooping to voter verification exhibition centres of the Asokwa Constuency in Kumasi to verify their names in the voters’ register.
Initially, the turnout was not encouraging, but after a public announcement by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the week-end, urging them to check their names, they trooped to the centres.
The voter verification exercise took off across the country on Friday, October 24, to enable eligible registered voters to check if their names were in the Voters’ register, which is expected to end on Thursday October 30.
At the Gonzalex International School Centre at Dompoase, near Atonsu, Mr. Akwasi Dwomfuor Kyei, the electoral officer, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that, 59 out of 490 registered voters turned up for the exercise from Friday to Sunday.
“The turn out this morning has been the heaviest since the exercise started and I can attribute this to the announcement” Mr Kyei said.
At the Kaasi Metropolitan Assembly Junior High School (M/A JHS) centre, out of a total of 1,414 eligible voters, 432 had checked their names as at 1005hours.
The scenario was however different at the Kaasi New Town and the Ohenemaa Junction (Kuwait) centres, which had experience a fairly high turn-out from day one.
The Ohemaa Junction (Kuwait) centre had 124 checking their names out of a total of 927 registered eligible voters.
Also 90 out of 780 had responded to the exercise at the Kaasi New Town Centre as at the same time.
Mr George Owusu Adusei, Officer in charge of the Ohenemaa Junction (Kuwait), said the low turn-out could be due to lack of enough education, besides, it has been the habit of many people to wait till the last day.
He therefore called on all to ensure that they check their names before they lose their franchise.
