Accra, Oct. 13, GNA - The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has condemned last Saturday's assault on Mr Sakyi Asare-Menako, Principal Assistant Registrar, by candidates of the November/December examination leading to his death three days later.

Mr Asare-Menako was assaulted at the Accra Academy Centre on October 8 after the English Language 2 paper by candidates who took mobile phones into the examination hall contrary to the Council's rules and regulations, WAEC said in a statement signed by Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, Senior Public Affairs Officer.

Giving details of the incident, WAEC said after the Paper, candidates whose phones were seized confronted Mr Asare-Menako and seriously assaulted him till he fell unconscious and then abandoned him. He was rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where he passed out on October 11.

"The Council calls on all well meaning Ghanaians to denounce the inhuman actions of these candidates as well as any attempt to bring violence into examinations and the society as a whole." The Council reiterated that the use of mobile phones was not allowed in any examination hall and asked candidates to comply with that rule.
