WAEC donates books to Yaw Donkorkrom Primary School

Yaw Donkorkrom(ER), March 10, GNA - The management of West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Thursday donated reading books to Yaw Donkorkrom Primary School in the Suhum-Kraboa-Coalter District of the Eastern region to improve the study of English language. The Council has selected nine schools in each region to be presented with the books based on the Chief Examiner's report on poor usage and performance of students in English Language examinations conducted by the council.

Mr Stanley Akuaku, Eastern Regional Controller of Examinations, presenting the books said it was the desire of the council that school authorities, opinion leaders and parents would encourage their pupils to read.

He urged teachers to seek creative ways of whipping up their pupils' interest in reading. Mr Akuaku said they could assist them to dramatize some of the stories to have command over the language. He asked children to endeavour to acquire knowledge to improve their status in life.

Mr Michael Nsowah, Director-General of Ghana Education Service, advised the pupils to take their studies seriously and not to feel attracted by the social vices in society. He assured them of efforts being made by Government to improve on the quality of education as well as the welfare of teachers to develop a well-informed citizenry ready to contribute to the nation's developmental effort.

Mrs Ewurabena Ahwoi, Eastern Regional Director of Education, commended the teachers for their hard work despite the trying conditions under which they worked.

According to her, it was the recognition of the state of the school and their dedication towards their work that inspired her to recommend the school for the donation.

On concerns that children were patronizing funerals at the expense of their studies, Mrs Ahwoi appealed to chiefs to intervene with social control measures to discourage the practice. Mr Godfred Okyere, Member of Parliament for Ayesuano, donated one million cedis to the school to procure school uniforms for children who would be enrolled in the school. Mr Kwaku Mensah, Deputy Co-ordinating Director of the assembly said about 90 per cent of its resources would be earmarked for education this year.
