Pediatorkope (G/A), April 24, GNA - The World Vision International (WVI), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) has constructed a number of projects at a total cost of 1.8 billion cedis for the people of Pediatorkope, an island in the Dangme East District.
The projects included a health centre with nurses' quarters and medical officer's bungalow attached, rehabilitation and construction of classroom blocks and provision of potable water.
About 200 farmers were also trained in modern agriculture and micro-enterprise management. Handing over the projects to the community at a ceremony in Pediatorkope on Saturday, Mr Alfred Owusu, WVI Director for the Southern Sector, called on the people to carry out regular maintenance on the facilities.
He said the WVI has purchased three boats fitted with out-board motors to ferry nurses during outreach activities and convey patients from surrounding villages to the health centre.
He commended the community for the communal spirit they exhibited during the construction of the projects, which made it possible for them to be completed on schedule and prayed that other communities emulate them.
Mr Owusu called on Mr Amos Lawerh Buertey, Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister and Member of Parliament for the area and Mr Kwame Caesar, District Chief Executive, to ensure that a resident medical doctor and nurses are posted to the health centre.
Mr Buertey, who commissioned the projects, expressed government's gratitude to NGOs particularly the WVI, whose contributions have improved the standard of living of the people.
He, however, called on officials of the NGOs to monitor the activities of their field workers so that they do not do anything for their personal gains to the detriment of the people.
Dr John Yabani, Dangme East District Director of Medical Services, gave the assurance that health personnel would be posted to the centre. In appreciation of their contribution towards the development of the area, Nene Pediator IV, Chief of the village, enstooled the Director of WVI as ''Nkosuohene", chief of progress and presented him with a gift.
