WVLC workers demand MDs dismissal

Takoradi, Aug. 15-GNA-Workers of the Western Veneer and Lumber Company Limited (WVLC) on Tuesday began in indefinite strike action over unpaid salaries.

The over 800 workers who were clad in red arm, head and neck bands sat in front of the premises of the company, also demanded the removal of the Managing Director Mr. Kwaku Prah Ghartey from office. Several armed Policemen were patrolling the company premises. Speaking to the media, Mr. Micheal Obeng, WVLC chairman of the Timber and Wood Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) said persistent discussions with management of the company over unpaid salaries for June, non-payment of workman compensation and long service awards were a direct violation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between management and workers.

He said their salaries have been delayed persistently and as at now some workers have still not received their salaries, while some workers at Awaso bush station have also not been paid. Mr. Obeng stressed that the workers would only resume work when the MD is removed from office.

Mr. Francis Cudjoe, Shop Stewards representative said any delay in the payment of workers salaries, which ranges between 350,000 to 600,000 made them even poorer since they have to continually buy on credit to meet the needs of their families.

Mr. Robert Cudjoe, Vice Chairman of the union said promises made by the board and MD has not been fulfilled to the workers and this had compelled them to embark on the demonstration. He said the company owed about seven billion cedis to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and this was likely to affect the workers when they retire.

He therefore called on the government to intervene to safeguard the workers interests.
