A contract has been awarded by the Ministry of Energy for the permanent resolution of the intermittent power challenges in Walewale in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region.

The latest move became imperative following an intervention by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for the Northern Electricity Company Limited (NEDCO) to look at the entire power network in Walewale and its environs.

In the interim a combined team of our electricians from Walewale and Bolgatanga have been contracted to reinforce the lines to have some stability in the short term for residents of the area.

As a result of the intervention by Dr Bawumia for the long term, the Energy Ministry awarded a contract for a total change of shield wires to conventional lines to ensure a permanent solution to the sporadic lighting of the whole of Walewale and its environs.

Meanwhile some poles have been discharged at the Municipal Assembly for work on the project to commence.

Last week, residents demonstrated against what they called rampant electricity cuts and increasing robbery attacks which they say were affecting normal life in the area.

Scores of them poured onto the street wearing red attires marching to the premises of the local assembly chanting war songs in to demand that the authorities provide them with regular electricity.

Protesters slowed vehicular movement on the busy Tamale to Bolga highway as security forces struggled to prevent chaos and rampage at the assembly facility.

Authorities were forced to close the doors of the facility and no official welcomes or addressed the protesters, who later dispersed but promised to stage more protests in the days ahead.

But officials of NEDCO revealed that there were already plans in the offing to have the matter resolved even before the said the demonstration promising to have the matter resolved.
