Wassa West District Assembly Adjudged Cleanest in Ghana

Tarkwa (W/R), Sept 4, GNA - The Wassa West District Assembly has been adjourned the best District Assembly in Ghana in terms of cleanliness awarded the 2005 trophy.

The presentation was made at the launch of the 4th National Sanitation Week held in Bolgatanga the capital of the Upper East Region. The Wassa West District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Emmanuel Kwesi Ayensu, disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Tarkwa. The DCE who received the trophy expressed his gratitude to the people in the District who helped in diverse to achieve the feat.

He said the Assembly paid A2171.6m from the Common Fund and =A2187.3m from the Assembly's internally generated revenue for direct labour and spent A2122.9m to buy fuel for refuse vehicles to maintain sanitation while A221.3m was used to maintain the trucks every year. Mr Ayensu said new equipment to maintain sanitation had been acquired to evacuate 336 tons of both solid and liquid waste generated in the District every week and to prepare the site for dumping.

He stated that in spite of these efforts by the Assembly, there were still problems and appealed to Unit Committees and Assemblymen to organize communal labour at least once every month to keep the environment clean.

The DCE appealed to the people to stop littering.
