Veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr has expressed grave concern about the increase in cases of medical doctors engaging in alcoholism, drug abuse, and other forms of vices in the line of duty.

In a discussion on Peace FM on November 12, 2024, a veteran reporter was taken aback after hearing the President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) voice concerns about the growing prevalence of intoxication among doctors during their shifts.

He asserted that the report of the GMA president, if accurate, indicates that doctors who are supposed to be saving lives would be putting them at risk instead.

"The President of the Ghana Medical Association has put some information out there. Eii Kwame! Don't you feel scared? The President of the Ghana Medical Association says that some of the doctors are serious alcoholics. The President raised concerns of alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and instances of sexual misconduct among some of its members across the country.

"If the report is true, the President said that issues have become one too many. If doctors drink in their homes, that is fine, but from what he is saying, it seems they have been drinking at work," he said in Twi.

He added, "If you are sick and you go to the hospital and the doctor who attends to you is drunk as hell, if you are not careful, he is rather going to wound you badly."

Kwesi Pratt Jnr cited instances where medical professionals' mistakes have endangered their patients' lives.
