The National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, took to the streets in the constituency to celebrate her release from police custody.
Naa Koryoo was reportedly detained after the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service invited her on Friday, June 7, 2024, over a gun possession issue.
She was initially arrested after a gun was reportedly found in her car following a clash at the district office of the Electoral Commission of Ghana in Kasoa.
She confirmed ownership of the gun retrieved from her vehicle in Kasoa, stressing that the registered firearm was to protect herself against the MP for the area, Mavis Hawa Koomson.
Her transfer to Cantonments to spend the night after her re-arrest triggered calls for supporters to go to the station and demand her release.
A viral video sighted by GhanaWeb showed the NDC parliamentary candidate standing through the roof of a Toyota Land Cruiser with the General Secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, going through the streets of Kasoa.
Naa Koryoo and Asiedu Nketiah were dancing to the party’s campaign song 'The Victory of Mahama is Coming Again' as they waved at the crowd who were cheering them on.
The parliamentary candidate at some point could be seen wiping off the tears of joy from her face.
