The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, called on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the chiefs and elders of the Asanteman.
Visuals of the event, sighted by GhanaWeb, showed Mahama, a former president, being mobbed as he arrived with his entourage at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
Mahama was accompanied by leading members of the NDC from the Ashanti Region, including former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Betty Mould-Iddrisu, former Commissioner of Police Kofi Boakye, and the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Augustus Andrews Nana Kwasi.
The NDC presidential candidate, during his remarks, told the Asantehene that he was there to ask for his prayers and blessings ahead of December 7, 2024, as part of his six-day campaign in the Ashanti Region.
The former president also thanked the king for permitting them to campaign in his kingdom.
He went on to list his government’s achievements in the Ashanti Region and criticised Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for failing to complete most of the projects he started.
He also criticised the government for the economic hardships in the country, indicating that he is the best person to lead the country out of the current mess.
For his part, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II expressed his pleasure at the former president’s call.
He indicated that without the involvement of Asanteman, no person can be the leader of Ghana.
He urged Mahama to continue to tell the people of Ghana what he had done and the things he intended to do when given the nod to lead the country again.
The king prayed for the election to be free and fair for the will of Ghanaians to prevail, adding that the election should be won at the polling station and not by machinations.
He went on to bless the former president and prayed that God grants his wish.
