A trailer has been released for *The Eyes of Ghana*, a documentary exploring Ghana’s independence history and efforts to preserve rare footage of the country’s founding years, with former United States President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, serving as executive producers.
The 90-minute documentary was directed by Ben Proudfoot and produced through the Obamas’ production company, Higher Ground Productions.
Private legal practitioner and New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko shared details of the documentary in a post on X on October 16, 2026, drawing attention to its focus on Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and the cameraman who documented key moments of his leadership.
The documentary, which also features internationally acclaimed streamer IShowSpeed as an executive producer, follows Chris Hesse, Kwame Nkrumah’s personal cameraman, as he attempts to recover and return an archive of more than 1,300 film reels documenting Ghana’s independence journey and the wider Pan-African movement.
A key figure in the film is Ghanaian filmmaker and producer Anita Afonu, who works with Hesse to preserve the archive and make the historical material accessible to a younger generation.
The documentary highlights the importance of preserving historical archives and ensuring that future generations can access firsthand visual accounts of Ghana’s political development.
The trailer features Ghana’s first President delivering some of his iconic speeches, including scenes from his leadership and Ghana’s independence era. It also showcases footage of the wider African liberation movement captured by Hesse.
