The 39 demonstrators who were arrested during the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protest and have now been charged with various crimes including unlawful assembly and causing unlawful damage contrary to the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), are denying engaging in any illegal acts.
However, viral videos of the demonstration have shown some of these demonstrators engaging in the very acts they are now denying.
The charges against the demonstrators are mainly because they blocked sections of the road at the 37 area, preventing the public and even police officers from using the road.
One of the protesters, who was crying out of the courtroom and pleading his innocence, is heard in one of the videos saying that he was “just a driver's mate,” but evidential videos showed him carrying a huge rubble onto the road.
Another woman, who was crying out of the window of the bus transporting the arrested protesters from the court, could also be seen among protesters who had blocked the road leading to the 37 Military Hospital.
Another video showed Raphael Afful Williams, a leading member of the #FixtheCountry Movement, arguing with a man over the blockage of the roads leading to the 37 Military Hospital.
Afful Williams was also captured in another video pushing a police officer who was trying to arrest Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a leading member of the Democracy Hub, as he attempted to bolt with the key of a police tow truck.
