Water Shortage: Blame climate change – Scientist

Dr Joseph Ampofo Addo, former director of the Water Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has attributed the recent water shortage to climate change.

According to him, climate change is drying up most of the water bodies across the world.

Dr Addo also indicated that the activities of farmers along the river banks are also partly to blame.

According to the Communications Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Stanley Martey, the rate of evaporation of water bodies across the country has become alarming and unless there is rain, there will be consequences for some communities.

Dr Addo while blaming bad farming practices as one of the causes of the problem, also said “this is the effect of climate change.”

“The Water Research Institute recently asked farmers who grow their crops along the water bodies to move backwards because their activities were affecting the health of the rivers,” he told Chief Jerry Forson on the Ghana Yensom show on Accra100.5FM on Tuesday January 30.

Meanwhile, the GWCL PRO Mr Martey has also noted that the rivers are depleting at a faster rate and warned if the water resources across the country are not managed the country will be importing water by end of 2020.

“Posterity will not forgive us if that happens,” he added.
