Water shortage hits Koforidua Municipality

Koforidua, April 29, GNA - Some parts of the Koforidua Municipality have been without water for the past four weeks as residents carry gallons and other containers from one place to another in search of portable water. The most affected areas included Srodae, Betom and Zongo, where residents form long queues to get water from commercial water points or bole holes.

Mr. Mark Doe, Eastern Regional Distribution Officer of Ghana water Company, told GNA in Koforidua that the water shortage was due to defects in the laying of fibre optic cables and zoning of areas by the company. He also said a strong windstorm hit the municipality destroying some of the cables.

Mr. Doe explained that due to the problem, the new Koforidua water system could not operate and the company had to revert to the old system of pumping water from the Densu River. He assured the public that consultants were working hard to fix the cables so that water could be pumped from the new water system to all parts of municipality.

Mr. Doe said water from the old system could not meet the demand of the people and appealed to residents to bear with the company as steps were being taken to remedy the situation.
