Watermelon sellers in Koforidua have adopted a new way of selling the fruits to attract customers.

They have stopped heaping the fruits on the ground and now wash them and neatly arrange the fruits on low wooden shelves.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview Mr Romeo Anane, a distributor of watermelon, said they had adapted to the method of displaying the watermelon on shelves, nylon bags and or on elephant grass because it makes the fruit neat and more attractive to costumers.

Ms Gladys Yeboah, another distributor, said the current practice also increase the shelf life of the fruit because when the fruit is left on the ground and comes into contact with water on the bare ground, it gets rotten quickly.

She added that, though creating the shelves comes with a cost, it is enhancing the sales of the fruit.
