Mr Charles Kofi Wayo, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has assured all and sundry that he has nothing against the NPP as a party, but all he has been preaching on radio and other news media, is that the party should not fail Ghanaians.
Mr Wayo the unsuccessful NPP Parliamentary candidate for Nima (Ayawaso East constituency) in the 2000 elections consequently pledged his unadulterated love for the country and party by saying “I love Ghana, I love my people, I will die for Ghana without thinking about it.” Mr Kofi Wayo also christened “chuck”, the maverick self-made American dollar millionaire said these in a rejoinder filed to Daily Guide last Friday in response to a previous publication in the paper which quoted the minister of Information and Presidential Affairs, Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey as having called him a liar.
The development occurred following exchange of words between them on an Accra private radio station two Thursdays ago which culminated in Kofi Wayo alleging that Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey once referred to Ashantis as bastards. Jake has since denied Wayo’s allegation.
However in a telephone interview with the paper last Friday, Kofi Wayo intimated that he does not wish to argue with the Information and Presidential Affairs minister over any issue any more. Asked why he thought it necessary to react then, Wayo explained that he has had to hit back because he does not want Jake to continually denigrate him. He said if Jake believes that he’s a Ghanaian then he should do the right thing, and “I will support him.”
Meanwhile, Wayo has promised to raise hell: if there was no marked change in the attitude of some of the Ministers and appointees that President Kufour has put in place. ‘
He admonished that if the government wants to continue enjoying the mandate of the people then it has to move faster than it is doing now. In his view, Kufour and his men are dragging the party; they are too elitist and need to get down to serious business. According to Wayo because of what he has been saying, many people from the ranks of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been calling to congratulate him: and some have vainly tried to win him over.
He swore that the last thing he will do is to identify himself with the NDC, adding “if the NDC comes to power again they will kill all of us, one by one. This is why I’ve been urging my own party the NPP not to repeat the mistakes of the NDC. He stressed that he just wants President Kufour and his men to do the right thing”.
