The Accra Metropolitan Archbishop of the Catholic Church in Ghana, Most Reverent Gabriel Charles Palmer-Buckle, has said Ghana is on the verge of “committing national suicide” with its polarised political landscape.
Archbishop Palmer-Buckle who chaired a lecture delivered by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on Friday May 17, 2013 was reiterating a concern echoed by the Asante Monarch concerning the highly divided political atmosphere in Ghana.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu had bewailed that: “We have allowed politics to dominate our lives and influence our thoughts that nothing else seems to matter than the good of the party we support”.
“We have also picked up some demons that now threaten to destroy the very basis of our national cohesion,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu said.
Reiterating the need for unity and oneness, Archbishop Palmer-Buckle said: “We have to admit that if this country is where it is; the problem is ours”.
He emphasised that: “We have a variety of tribes, a variety of nations, a variety of peoples, but we are still together, and we should not allow anybody to tear us apart”.
The lecture was on the topic: “Advancing Together”.
It was organised by the National Council for Civic Education (NCCE) as part of its annual Democracy Lectures in Accra.
