We are suffering, end lockdown now - Kasoa residents appeal to government

Residents of Kasoa Newtown are pleading with the government to end the restriction of movements imposed on some parts of the country which include theirs.

They say life hasn’t been easy since the lockdown began and they need to work to survive and also take care of their families.

The residents’ complaint comes in ahead of the president’s address to the nation later Sunday evening.

They told GhanaWeb that security agencies enforcing the directive in the area are not helping matters even for food sellers.

“The lockdown should be lifted because at the beginning of the imposition we were told those who sell food can come out and work. We sell onions at the market and we have ID Cards to that effect. Initially, they said taxis can load maximum of three passengers but now they are saying only one passenger is allowed. So those of us who can’t afford to charter taxis what do we do,” one resident said.

He added that some officers are taking advantage of the situation to extort money from drivers.

“This morning we came through Kokrobite. Right at the police station our taxi driver was arrested and was made to pay GH¢10 before we were allowed to come.”

They pleaded with government to lift the directive so they can freely move around and make money to take care of their homes.

“If it is extended the poor will suffer. The various relief packages are disbursed with discrimination. How will I survive since I have no food and no money? They should allow us to work and take measures to protect ourselves from the virus. How will you eat if there is no money?”

“We are all suffering. Government should allow us go about our regular duties but with protective equipment. If the lockdown is extended, we will continue to suffer,” another said.

Another resident said the lockdown will be of great inconvenience to Muslims especially as they are about starting their annual fast.

“Even if the lockdown is extended by one hour, we will suffer, especially Muslims. The Muslim fast is approaching, and we are currently home without money. If the lockdown is extended, we will not be happy about it.

Some residents threatened to disobey the directive if it is extended as they can’t take the hardship any longer.

“Whether the government likes it or not on Monday, we will go about our normal routine because no one looks after us, we have children and wives so we can't stay indoors. I can't also beg on the streets for a small pack of rice. They should allow us because this virus is just catarrh, you just need light soup and you are okay.”

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is expected to address the nation Sunday evening on additional steps government has taken to curb the spread of the Coronavirus in the country.

He is also expected to announce an end or extension of the three-week lockdown imposed on Accra, Tema, Kasoa and Kumasi.

Ghana has recorded 834 Coronavirus cases so far with 9 deaths and 99 recoveries.
