Acclaimed Ghanaian playwright Ebo Whyte has lamented the country's lack of recognition for mental health problems and the impact this has on efforts to provide support for those affected.

He pointed out that despite the prevalence of mental health issues, they remain largely unacknowledged, hindering progress in addressing them.

“We are not taking mental health seriously in Ghana but at the same time seeing how common it is we don't recognise it and so because of that we are not making good strides in helping those of us going through it because it's not recognised, it's not there,” he said in an interview with GhanaWeb.

His comments come as he spoke about the motivation behind his latest play, 'Takeover', which is showing at the National Theatre in Accra.

The play delves into the often-overlooked issues of mental health and loyalty in Ghanaian society.

'Takeover' is not just a story set within the confines of a church; it's a narrative that resonates with the broader themes of trust, loyalty, and discipline in familial bonds, particularly between fathers and daughters.
